This remains one of my most popular paintings. It's emblematic of my surreal works, with more of an unsettling nature than my recent tranquil, atmospheric pieces, and has served as an enjoyable Rorshach test for some viewers. Some find it intriguing, others repulsive; some a comment on aging and death; or the fluid nature of the self; or illustrative of pressures and anxieties. Several people see Darth Sidious from Star Wars. I want to create images that arrest viewers. Technically speaking, I've always been inclined toward realism or hyperrealism, and the visionary/fantastical/surreal genre of art, as it is titled, and this is one of my most thorough creations in this realm. Recently it has reminded me of the new understanding I have of stress and its causes, which you can read about here on the blog. One quote about art that has stuck with me says "stop thinking about your art as an object and start thinking about it as triggers for experience." I met a vibrant, inspiring artist in Australia who talked to me about adorning one's surroundings with art that has a certain gravity to it, and triggers conversation or controversy. What would this trigger in your environment?
